State of the Union Address

Filed under: Svašta — Lidija @ 9:05 pm

Sjedim pred telkom.
09:09pm
Pala je pusa Condi na obraz. Jaaaaaaj….
09:11pm
I dalje plješću. On stoji na podiju, popio je malo vode. Smješi se kao retardirana krava u proljeće.
09:12pm
Lupilo čekičem. Predstavili njega. Opet ovacija. Ajme, ludila…
09:12pm
Počinje govor. Pozdravlja sve. I nas.
Dugi pogled u kameru. I dalje lovimo “neprijatelje slobode”. Kad god veli duty meni to zvuči kao doodie. Blah, blah, Amerika je vođa svijeta. Pljesak!!!!
09:15pm
Naravno, spominje 9/11. Opet diktature i teroristi i WMD. Hm.
09:17pm
Ovacija.
09:19pm
Na vicious mu se plete jezik. Velika je to riječ, nije njemu lako. Pogled u kameru, “… and we will never surrender to evil.” Ovacija. John Kerry prvi prestaje s pljeskom i sjeda. Ha, nije ni njemu sad lako. Od takvoga izgubiti izbore.
09:21pm
Wow. On je i prorok!
09:22pm
“I am confident in our plan for victory… we are winning.” Pljesak.
09:24pm
“Hindsight alone is not a wisdom and second-guessing alone is not a strategy.” Pogled u kameru. Joj, na ovome su radili valjda mjesecima.
09:25pm
Blah, blah… podržavati vojsku. Ovacija.
09:26pm
Spominje se Daniel Clay, poginuo lani. Falluja. Tam gdje on pobjeđuje. Roditelji i sestra u publici. Ovacija. On nabacuje onaj nezgrapni blentavi osmijeh.
09:28pm
Demokratska reforma Srednjeg Istoka. Egipt, Palestina, Hamas. Trajni mir. Saudijska Arabija. Sloboda. “Liberty is the right and hope of all humanity. ” Iran. Libanon. Tome treba stati na kraj. Nuklearno oružje. Da bar jednom nuclear izgovori kak treba.
09:31pm
Direktno obraćanje svima u Iranu. Hoćemo biti vaši prijatelji. “…spreading hope in hopeless lands.”
09:33pm
“…United States is a partner for a better life.” Da se on malo raspita među Hrvatima?
09:34pm
“…I ask you to re-authorize The Patriot Act.” Pljesak. Yikes. Conspiracy. 9/11 teroristi i Al Quaeda. Terrorist surveillance program. Yikes! “…we won’t sit and wait to be hit again.” Ovacija.
09:36pm
“America is always more secure when freedom is on the march.” Pogled u kameru. Vodimo svijet slobodi. Pljesak. Ovacija. Malo si popije vode.
09:37pm
Ekonomija je zdrava i jaka i raste brže nego bilo koje druge industrijske sile. Cijeli svijet je zavidan. No, Kina i Indija su ozbiljna konkurencija. Protectionists. Centralists. Anti-immigrants. “We hear claims immigrants are to blame for the economy, even though this economy could not function without immigrants.” Ovacija. On ima plan. Nema straha. On ima plan…
09:39pm
Tax relief. Pitam se hoće li spomenuti deficit budžeta. “Make tax cuts permanent.” Oni plješću na to?!
09:41pm
Evo, do 2009 će prepoloviti deficit. Na pola. On ima plan. Line item veto.Bljah.
09:43pm
“Baby bloomers. Hm. Baby boomers.” Evo nam i Hillary. Šoušl sikjuriti.Jao…
09:44pm
“We have to work together to get this problem solved.” Nagnut prema kameri, pogled u nju, uzdignut prst. To on nas špota?
09:45pm
Opet on nateže imigrante. Odu mi imigranti i kaj mu ostane? Ma, se on šali?
09:46pm
Affordable healthcare. Oxymoron. Na žalost. Obećaje jefinije zdravstveno osiguranje. Medical Liability Reform. Da se ne može tužiti aljkave doktore.
09:48pm
“AMERICA IS ADDICTED TO OIL.” No way?!
09:49pm
Hibridi. Električni auti. Auti na slamu. Sijeno. Hamburgere. Smanjiti uvoz nafte. Ne ovisiti o nafti Bliskog istoka. Pljesak. Ovacija. Jupi. Sad će samo ovi u Texasu izrabljivati svojom naftom.
09:51pm
American Competitive Initiative.

Meni najbolje knjige o New Yorku

Filed under: Ja, New York City — Lidija @ 8:36 pm

New York je u njima protagonist. Opisi su editorial reviews. Redoslijed, abecednim redom prema autoru.

Auster, Paul: The New York Trilogy
City of Glass, Ghosts, and The Locked Room, The New York Trilogy are novels of desire: the desire to write a detective novel, to read one, to inhabit it. . . By turning the mystery novel inside out, Auster may have initiated a whole new round of storytelling.

Bushnell, Candace: Sex and the City
A comically sordid look at status and ambition and the many characters consumed by the sexual politics of the ’90s.

Capote, Truman: Breakfast at Tiffany’s
The popular story of Holly Golightly–”a cross between Lolita and Auntie Mame”.

Gourevitch, Philip: A Cold Case
Nakon nekoliko godina u tjedniku The New Yorker preuzeo je uredništvo prestižne The Paris Review.
Frank Koehler was only 15 when he shot a friend in the back for double-crossing him. That’s the sort of guy he was–violent, Mob-connected, and remorse-free. In the same rough-and-tumble postwar neighborhood on Manhattan’s West Side lived a very different young man: Andy Rosenzweig, rigorously straight and determined to become a policeman at a time when cops were more likely to be taking naps or bribes than nabbing criminals. Years later, in 1970, Koehler murdered two men after an argument in a restaurant. One of the victims was a friend of Rosenzweig’s. It was a straightforward case, but in a typical show of the NYPD’s ineptitude, the case was closed when someone decided to declare Koehler dead, allowing him to slip away.

Fitzgerald, F. Scott: The Great Gatsby
Iako ih je u knjizi preimenovao, Fitzgerald piše o sjevernoj obali Long Islanda. Nije NYC, ali ipak…
Self-made, self-invented millionaire Jay Gatsby embodies some of Fitzgerald’s–and his country’s–most abiding obsessions: money, ambition, greed, and the promise of new beginnings. Gatsby’s rise to glory and eventual fall from grace becomes a kind of cautionary tale about the American Dream.

James, Henry: Washington Square
James’s astute story of a plain heiress and the poor, handsome suitor who may or may not love her only for her wealth.

Lewis, Michael: Liar’s Poker
As described by Lewis, liar’s poker is a game played in idle moments by workers on Wall Street, the objective of which is to reward trickery and deceit. With this as a metaphor, Lewis describes his four years with the Wall Street firm Salomon Brothers, from his bizarre hiring through the training program to his years as a successful bond trader. Lewis illustrates how economic decisions made at the national level changed securities markets and made bonds the most lucrative game on the Street. His description of the firm’s personalities and of the events from 1984 through the crash of October 1987 are vivid and memorable.

McCourt, Frank: Angela’s Ashes
Depresivno i istovremeno inspirirajuće.
The pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930 to recent Irish immigrants Malachy and Angela McCourt, Frank grew up in Limerick after his parents returned to Ireland because of poor prospects in America. It turns out that prospects weren’t so great back in the old country either–not with Malachy for a father. A chronically unemployed and nearly unemployable alcoholic, he appears to be the model on which many of our more insulting cliches about drunken Irish manhood are based. Mix in abject poverty and frequent death and illness and you have all the makings of a truly difficult early life.

Shorto, Russell: The Island at the Center of the World
Povijest New Yorka iz 17. stoljeća, kao nizozemske kolonije.
Drawing on 17th-century Dutch records of New Netherland and its capital, Manhattan, translated by scholar Charles Gehring only in recent decades, Shorto (Gospel Truth) brings to exuberant life the human drama behind the skimpy legend starting with the colony’s founding in 1623. Most Americans know little about Dutch Manhattan beyond its first director, Peter Minuit, who made the infamous $24 deal with the Indians, and Peter Stuyvesant, the stern governor who lost the island to the English in 1664. These two seminal figures receive their due here, along with a huge cast of equally fascinating characters. But Shorto has a more ambitious agenda: to argue for the huge debt Americans owe to the culture of Dutch Manhattan, the first place in the New World where men and women of different races and creeds lived in relative harmony.

Wharton, Edith: The House of Mirth
New York at the turn of the century was a time of opulence and frivolity for those who could afford it. But for those who couldn’t and yet wanted desperately to keep up with the whirlwind, like Wharton’s charming Lily Bart, it was something else altogether: a gilded cage rather than the Gilded Age.

Wharton, Edith: The Age of Innocence
OK, volim Edith. Što mogu?
A story of the upper classes of Old New York, and Newland Archer’s impossible love for the disgraced Countess Olenska, is a perfectly wrought book about an era when upper-class culture in this country was still a mixture of American and European extracts, and when “society” had rules as rigid as any in history.

Wolfe, Tom: The Bonfire of the Vanities
Priznajem, prvo sam gledala film. Nešto sasvim drugačije. Treba pročitati knjigu.
Sherman McCoy, a farcically arrogant investment banker (dubbed a “Master of the Universe,” Wolfe’s brilliant metaphorical co-opting of a then-important toy for boys), hits a black guy in the Bronx with his Mercedes and runs–right into a nightmare peopled by vicious mistresses, thin wives like “social x-rays,” slime-bag politicos, tabloid hacks, and Dantesque denizens of the “justice” system.

Ne mogu odoljeti

Filed under: Ja, Svašta — Lidija @ 8:05 am

As I grow in age, I value women who are over 30 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why:

A woman over 30 will never wake you in the middle of the night to ask, “What are you thinking?” She doesn’t care what you think.

If a woman over 30 doesn’t want to watch the game, she doesn’t sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do. And, it’s usually something more interesting.

A woman over 30 knows herself well enough to be assured in whom she is, what she is, what she wants and from whom. Few women past the age of 30 give a hoot what you might think about her or what she’s doing.

Women over 30 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant.

Of course, if you deserve it, they won’t hesitate to shoot you, if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved They know what it’s like to be unappreciated.

A woman over 30 has the self-assurance to introduce you to her women friends. A younger woman with a man will often ignore even her best friend because she doesn’t trust the guy with other women. Women over 30 couldn’t care less if you’re attracted to her friends because she knows her friends won’t betray her.

Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 30. They always know.

A woman over 30 looks good wearing bright red lipstick. This is not true of younger women.

Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 30 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and honest. They’ll tell you right off if you are a jerk if you are acting like one! You don’t ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over 30 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it’s not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well- coiffed hot woman of 30+, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year-old waitress.

Ladies, I apologize.

For all those men who say, “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free”. Here’s an update for you.

Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage, why? Because women realize it’s not worth buying an entire Pig, just to get a little sausage.

Spašeno s ranijeg bloga

Filed under: New York City — Lidija @ 9:15 pm

Zapravo, vjerojatno jedini tekst vrijedan spašavanja s onog bloga…

Najvažnija mjesta za posjetu u New Yorku

Manhattan

1.
Ako ćete u samo jedan muzej, onda je to Met (The Metropolitan Museum of Art). Odvojite malo ekstra vremena i sjednite uz Temple of Dendur i gledajte drveće u parku.

2.

4.
Ako ćete u dva muzeja, onda MoMA ilitiga Museum of Modern Art.

7.
Kava i desert u SoHo Grand.

8.
Besplatna i prepuna inspiracije je posjeta centralnoj New York Public Library na 5. Aveniji i 40. ulici.

9.
Ah, o tome mogu napisati cijelu knjigu, prema tome, dropping the subject now.

10.

13.

Zabavno. Obavezno na hot dog u Nathan’s.

Queens

16.
The Panorama of New York City je stalna postava u Queens Museum of Art.

The Bronx

18.

19.
Iako obično ne volim zoološke vrtove, The Bronx Zoo je iznimka. Wow!

20.
Ja sam uvijek za te bedastoće, ali oko Božića obavezna je posjeta The New York Botanical Garden jer njihov Holiday Train Show je presladak.

Staten Island

21.
No, s trajekta puca predivan pogled na njujoršku luku i Statue of Liberty.

I’m baaack!

I parkova. I tome sličnih tema.
